The coffee was wretched and dried our mouths out. I much prefer to go to the Soma Café on campus for coffee. If only they served breakfast…
The bacon needs special consideration. It was way too salty and looked gross - adorned in bad grill leavins.
**This is Breakfast Connoisseurs First** We couldn’t finish our bacon, it was so bad. There have been times where we’ve not been to full to finish a meal, but we’ve never rejected hog meat like we did there. It appeared to have been cooked in a stack, singing the edges but leaving the centres chewy and underdone.
Chartwells’ strong points are that there’s free WiFi available even if you’re not a student (true, it’s through the university and not Chartwells themselves, but it’s available for you while you’re eating there), and that their plates and cutlery are Tater Ware.
Plates made from potatoes, gotta love it. There’s also some fun art on the walls, oversize images of Mick Jagger and John Wayne (note: links are not to replications of the art I’m talking about). Again, these are courtesy of the University, but you can enjoy them while choking down Chartwells.
Chartwells has previously been compared to airplane food by the Breakfast Connoisseurs, but after sitting down to their breakfast I feel that statement is unfair to airplane food. The only food I allow myself to buy from them is a tuna wrap. Otherwise I’m out the door and 100 feet away are better places to eat, like Extreme Pita and Booster Juice, two of my favourites. If you really need breakfast and don’t want to go far from school, for whoever’s sake, go to the Black Sheep or the Ellice Café & Theatre!
Recently I was at a meeting on campus. They ordered Chartwells Pizza for us. It was gross. Message for Chartwells - try harder!!!

Chartwells is a stain on the U of W’s tie. It’s not as if that tie was spotless to begin with, but this contracted food service provider does not lend itself to quality. Just saying the name around the university is enough to elicit grimaces from anybody within earshot. Student Ryan Block said “If you’re going to eat at Chartwells, breakfast is your best bet.” Ryan, that’s a bet I’m not willing to research.
(We now proceed with the research. Leif)
Our eggs were fine, and made to order. The hashbrowns were giant tater tots and the toast came a little sunburned. However, we had our choice of rye, 12 grain or seven grain burnt toast. It was nice to have a selection. I was puzzled by the number of grains offered – is someone going to be so picky as to choose seven grain because they just don’t like those other five?
The 4th floor cafeteria
A large selection of nearly undrinkable coffee.
