Bernstein’s would be easy to miss if you were just driving by. I honestly couldn’t identify their spot on the busy outdoor billboard, my eyes got tired it was so cluttered.
I lived two streets away from the restaurant for two years and had no idea it existed. The Falafel Place used to be just across the street, so it may have been that I paid more attention to them. Bernstein’s owner, Marla, opened the deli 25 years ago and keeps it pretty casual. They stay open until the last customer has left, but the turn the grill off at a certain point. “We don’t throw people out,” she said. Most of what was on the menu was also available in the store.
When we got to the Delistaurant (an official BreakfastWinnipeg term), the layout reminded me a bit of Stella’s. There was a deli section beside the small seating area. Two main differences were that there was a whole lot more white on the walls than the sorta-bohemian Stella’s, and we didn’t have to serve our own coffee. Bonus. Especially since the coffee wasn’t good at all. It wasn’t quite as bad as Polonez, but the name came up.
Bernstein’s had lots of Jewish cuisine that looked really good. Their chalkboard menu made their latkes and borscht sound pretty good. Their “award winning” corned beef hash is going to get sampled at some point. We ordered a basket of lavosh (flatbread) but never received it. Too bad.
Not far from the “herring, etc.” portion of the menu was another unique listing: a side of Cheez Whiz for 35 cents. Do people really order this on the side? I would pay more to have it scraped off something I ate, rather than added to.

The breakfast was decent. Nothing too fancy. The toast was good and thick and singed perfectly. The eggs were good, but the bacon was crispy to the point of burnt. I like mine a bit more flexy. The surprise of the morning were the hashbrowns; they were okay, but deep fried. The surprising part was that Marla said they deep fry them, then grill them after! That made them taste less-obviously-fried than others we’ve had, but it was still greasy.
This was an okay breakfast. The burnt bacon turned me off as did the potatoes, but I’m definitely going to come back here for lunch some time.
